The pre-workout shake

One thing I was advised against using was a pre-workout shake. For those that don’t know what they are, it’s a concoction of various powders that you consume with water prior to your regular workout routine. I’ve heard everything from don’t take them at all due to the addictiveness, take it before a major workout to ingesting it religiously before every session. Wanting to improve my game at the gym and take my training to the next level I decided to investigate a little further and start by making my own. I’d first need something to put it in.

Once the hydra cup came in the mail, I went straight to work to test it out. I gathered the following ingredients for my first workout:

  • BCAAs
  • Creatine
  • Beta Alanine
  • Taurine
  • Instant Coffee
  • Sugar

The first time I packed everything in for a weights workout and I’m not sure if it was because it was my first dose or because I didn’t sleep as much that night but I could feel my heart beating every step of the way. Energy was up, felt super pumped and at work afterwards it was as if I had a mini-crash (slightly embarrassingly). Despite feeling tired I could push through everything and I was pleasantly surprised by the effects.

Beta Alanine is the compound that gives that intense pump in the heart and Taurine is there to balance out amino acids; since I didn’t want to make it a necessity for me to get through my regular routine I simply drop those two on the rest of my days. Altogether over the past few weeks I feel a lot better pushing through a workout and my muscle mass is steadily increasing, faster than I thought I could (probably due to the additional BCAAs).

If this little experience taught me anything, it’s worth stepping outside your comfort zone to experiment with something new.
